Once again, the new defense attorney delays the hearing

Once again, a defense attorney, Ngozi Akandu, stalled the trial of a university student, Chidinma Ojukwu, accused of the murder of Usifo Ataga, CEO of Super TV.

Ms. Ojukwu is on trial for alleged murder, robbery and forgery along with her sister, Chioma Egbuchu, and Adedapo Quadri.

In a text message to his colleague on Thursday, Akandu told the court he would be absent due to a “sudden health ailment.”

The lawyer began to represent Ms. Egbuchu after the latter wrote to the Public Defender’s Office to communicate her intention to change her lawyer.

Subsequently, Mr. Akandu announced his appearance as the third defendant’s new lawyer and told the court that the documents provided to him were unclear.

He said that he would need clearer copies and more time to study the documents.

In the last session on May 16, Akadu sought more time to study the court document.

“I do not have facilities to provide services to the third defendant. I request, therefore, that today’s date and others already set be left vacant, ”he had said.

“This is because I have seen the volume of documents from other lawyers; It’s not something someone can read in a day.”

The court has set a new hearing on the matter for July 7.

The suspects were arraigned on October 12, 2021 on a nine-count count.

Messrs. Ojukwu and Quadri face the first eight charges bordering on the crimes of conspiracy, murder, stabbing, forgery, making bank statements and robbery.

The third defendant faces the ninth charge: theft of the iPhone 7 belonging to the late Ataga.

The prosecution charged Messrs. Ojukwu and Quadri with conspiring to murder Mr. Ataga on June 15, 2021, by stabbing him multiple times in the neck and chest with a knife.

The alleged murder took place in not. 19, Adewale Oshin Street, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos.

They were also accused of forgery through procurement and preparation of bank account statements allegedly made by the deceased.
