An adult man has been hospitalized after two residential buildings in Ketu, Lagos State, partially collapsed on Sunday.

The two- and four-story buildings next to each other collapsed at 48 Oduntan Street, Kosofe Bus Stop in Ketu, the permanent secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Olufemi Damilola Oke-Osanyintolu, said in a statement on Sunday.

The buildings collapsed as a result of aging and poor maintenance by the owners, he said.

“Further investigation revealed that the building’s staircase collapsed. Unfortunately, an adult male fell due to the impact of the collapse from the top floor and was transported to the hospital,” the statement read.

“Residents of the building have been asked to leave the building under the supervision of the combined team of LASEMA, RRS, LABSCA and LNSC, to avoid further secondary incidents.

“However, the said building will be demolished as it failed the structural integrity test, as confirmed by a LABSCA official on site, thus posing a threat to the public and adjacent buildings.”
