The closing day for transfers, which was last Tuesday, has seen super eaglesStriker Paul Onuachu will join Joe Aribo at Southampton from Belgian side Genk for a princely sum of £18.5m.

The transfer has seen Southampton become another top-tier EPL team that has two Nigerian players in its squad after Leicester City and Nottingham Forest.

While the Foxes feature Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi, Nottingham Forest also features two Nigerian forwards, Taiwo Awoniyi and Emmanuel Dennis.

Onuachu, who scored 17 goals in 22 appearances for his former team, would be much needed at Saint Mary’s Stadium as Southampton hope to bounce back from their poor form.

The Saints are currently in 20th position with 15 points, having played 20 games.

Onuachu, 28, is the Saints’ second signing after Kamaldeen Sulemana joined French side Rennes’ relegation-threatened squad in the window time-out.

While speaking at the press conference, Southampton manager Nathan Jones described Onuachu as one of the vital players in his team looking for a redeemable league feat.

“Paul is an important signing for us and completes what has been an extremely positive month in terms of signings.

“He’s tough to play against, he has a tremendous record throughout his career and he’s also someone who brings a lot of experience to him, so he’ll be a very positive addition to the team.”

Meanwhile, the striker is expected to be in action when Southampton visit Frank Onyeka’s Brentford at Community Stadium on Saturday.
