Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde blamed the alleged second wave of COVID-19 on Wednesday as highly speculated, saying the state is still in the first wave.
The governor made the revelation, during a press conference with the correspondents of the Governor’s Office, held at the Government House, Agodi, Ibadan, about the update of COVID-19 in the state.
According to him, the experts with whom he consulted in the process of finding out if there is a second wave of the disease in the state, confirmed that: “There is no second wave, we are still in the first wave, because I asked the experts what What is this about the waves and they referred to the Spanish flu of 1918; And they said the first wave was during the winter and then they had a break because they went through the summer, you know it’s hot.
“But here, it’s summer all year round. So we don’t have summer, we don’t have winter.
“I have always said that all of our responses to COVID-19 in Oyo State will be guided by data, science and logic. As for the state of Oyo, the data we have does not point to a second wave.
“For example, between the time we started testing people in March 2020 and December 2020, we ran 20,000 tests of which about 3,000 tested positive for COVID-19.
“From December 2020 to date, we have performed another 14,000 tests and we have had around 696 positive cases.
“The data says that COVID-19 is still very much present and science tells us that we can slow the spread by taking precautions. The logical thing is to follow what science dictates.
“We know how difficult 2020 was for many of us, so logically we shouldn’t do things that make the situation worse.
“This is not the time to lower our guard, we should not take any of the precautions lightly,” adding that in the past month, the state sadly recorded eight deaths.
The governor hinted that his administration did everything possible to provide more resources for the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to continue managing the spread of the disease in the state.
