TikTok was banned in Pakistan after the country’s telecom regulator found that it had not leaked “immoral and indecent” content.
It is the latest blow to the troubled social media platform, which was banned in India in June after India said it had received reports that TikTok and other Chinese apps were “stealing and surreptitiously transmitting user data.”
The app, which is owned by China-based ByteDance, is also facing a potential ban in the US over user privacy concerns.
The Pakistan Telecommunications Authority said its ban would be in effect until TikTok introduced a mechanism that would moderate illegal content, adding that it has received “complaints from different segments of society against immoral and indecent content on the video sharing app.”
TikTok, meanwhile, has said it is “committed to following the law in the markets where the app is offered.”
“We have been in regular communication with the PTA and we continue to work with them,” the company said. “We are hopeful of reaching a conclusion that will help us continue to serve the country’s vibrant and creative online community.”
But the move by Pakistan, an ally of China, raises questions about the future of the company given increasing scrutiny of the app by world governments for a variety of reasons, ranging from nudity to privacy.
