Paul Rusesabagina

The appeal to the Kigali court to quash the denial of the famous Paul Rusesabagina’s initial request for bail two weeks ago, following the mysterious arrest in August of the polarizing hero of the 1994 hit Rwandan genocide movie “Hotel Rwanda” .

Rusesabagina faces 13 charges, including terrorism and murder, due to the violent activities of the armed wing of his foreign co-founded Congolese opposition party, the Rwandan Movement for Democratic Change (MRCD).

The militia group, the National Liberation Front (FLN), claimed responsibility for a series of attacks in the Nyungwe forest in 2018 that resulted in the loss of several lives and the destruction of property.

The 66-year-old defendant maintains that he did not have a direct participation in these activities and only had a diplomatic role within the main political party.

The family of the ex-owner of the hotel had already requested this Thursday the intervention of the United States and the European Union, in particular Belgium, where Rusesabagina, a political dissident, has lived in exile for about two decades and where he has his mother tongue. . citizenship.

They claim that his father was abducted, illegally detained and not allowed to choose or consult with his lawyers, and request that he be immediately released and fairly tried abroad.
