No fewer than three suspected gunmen have been killed and two others arrested after an armed duel between security operatives and thugs in three communities in the local government areas of Batsari, Dutsin-ma and Safana in Katsina state.
The exchange of fire began on Monday, July 27, around 1 a.m., in the village of Gano, Batsari, when bandits in their numbers, armed with AK-47 rifles, attacked the village.
State police command spokesman Gambo Isah, who confirmed Thursday, said security officers also recovered 11 motorcycles, a pistol, a variety of stolen items and dozens of whispered pets.
Isah said the security teams, codenamed Operations Puff and Saharan DaniIn the area, acting on a report that gunmen were attacking Gano, they assaulted the village and intercepted the thugs on their way to the forest and confronted them in a duel of arms.
“The thugs abandoned their motorcycles and escaped into the forest. The teams managed to recover five of the bandits’ motorcycles and all the animals they stole, “he said.
In Ruwan-Dorawa village, Dutsin-man local government area of the state, he further confirmed that the combined teams of the Counter-Terrorism Unit, CTU and the group of vigilantes in the area killed three bandits and recovered an AK rifle -47, six motorcycles and 40 sheep on July 28.
This, he said, followed a distress call that many thugs armed with AK-47 rifles were attacking the village of Ruwan-Dorawa at approximately 1 a.m. on Tuesday, adding that the team chased the bandits and blocked their possible exit route, involving them in a shooting.
Similarly, two suspected thugs were caught in the Babban Duhu village in the Safana state local government after gunmen, sporadically firing into the air, attacked the village of Garin Zaki in the Batsari local government area on Tuesday 28 July, at approximately 11 pm and they robbed three stores of provisions and took varied articles.
“The footprints of the bandits, which go back to the village of Babban Duhu, Safana LGA, ended at the home of an Abubakar Ibrahim Maude, 50, and Hassan Ibrahim, 30, from the same address.
“A search of the house was carried out and some stolen items were recovered,” the command spokesman said.
