Anambra state police officers yesterday thwarted an attack by an armed gang on the Nteje Division police headquarters in Oyi township in the state and killed one member of the assailants.

Operations led by state police commissioner Echeng Echeng said a Type 06 rifle, ammunition and charms from the gang were recovered.

Command spokesman Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ikenga Tochukwu said in a statement that a gang member was killed during a shootout with police officers.

“The Police Commissioner led the crack squad, when he responded to the distress call when the station was attacked by the deadly gang. The police operations decisively confronted the aggressors.

“During the duel of weapons, one of the gunmen was neutralized and the assailants fled the scene due to the superiority of the operatives’ fire. The station was secured and all police operations and weapons are intact.”

CP Echeng has reiterated that the Command will not relent in carrying out its mandate on the protection of life and property,” added Tochukwu.

IN another development, five people burned to death after their vehicles caught fire following a collision.

Although the cause of the accident could not be determined, it was deduced that it was a Toyota Hiace bus and a Toyota Highlander.

Newslodge deduced that the incident occurred in Nawfia along the Enugu-Onitsha highway on Tuesday night, but was discovered on Wednesday morning.

An eyewitness said the victims included two reverend Catholic sisters, their driver, as well as a husband and wife (names withheld).

Another eyewitness said that he arrived at the crash site that same night while it was still raining, as the vehicles were still on fire, but that it was too late for any significant help.
