Zamfara Police Command said its staff killed two arms dealers on Saturday and recovered some ammunition they were carrying.

The arms dealers were intercepted on the Gummi-Anka highway, police said.

Command spokesman Mohammed Shehu said police acted on an intelligence report about the movement of the car in which the suspects were traveling from Taraba state to Zamfara.

Shehu said that while other suspects in the vehicle were running into the bush with gunshot wounds, two of the suspects died.

He said some of the weapons and ammunition recovered by police during a search at the scene include three live projectiles for rocket-propelled grenades, three explosive projectiles, 152 rounds of live ammunition for AK 47 rifles, 200 rounds of live ammunition for anti-aircraft rifles and some charms.

Shehu said the operation led to an exchange of fire between the suspects and police that lasted for hours.

He said the weapons were being delivered to terrorist gangs in Zamfara from Taraba state.

“The feat was recorded after an intelligence information was received regarding the movement of the suspects inside a Toyota Corolla vehicle that contained the previously mentioned exhibits of taraba state En route terrorist camp in Zamfara state. Two (2) of the suspects were fatally wounded, while others escaped into the bush with possible gunshot wounds. The injured suspects were taken to the Yariman Bakura Gusau Specialized Hospital and later the Doctor confirmed their death while they were hospitalized,” he said.

Shehu said more officers have been deployed to the site to “build trust.”

He assured that the police will remain committed to rid the State of terrorist and criminal activities.

Terrorist activities, including murder, kidnapping for ransom and cattle rustling, have been on the rise in northwestern states, including Zamfara state.

Arms dealers who supply terrorists with weapons, ammunition and other necessities, as well as informants who provide information, have been part of a large cabal that supports the activities of terrorists.
