Police speak out on allegation of attempted murder of Rivers faction chairman

The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, Olatunji Disu, has dismissed allegations of an attempted assassination of the Speaker of the State Assembly faction, Edison Ehie.

Mr Disu told reporters in Port Harcourtcapital of the state, that the command had launched a thorough investigation to determine the spokesperson’s claims.

Mr. Ehie (PDP Ahoada-East II) had claimed that some police officers dressed as mufti fired shots sporadically while trying to force their way into his private residence to “murder” him, but the police officers assigned to him resisted.

But the police commissioner described what happened at Mr Ehie’s residence as a routine police patrol.

“The preliminary investigations we have carried out so far have not revealed any attempt to assassinate the spokesperson.

“All I know is that police officers were patrolling the convoy, which is routine.

“We have made frantic efforts to contact the leader and provide us with the information he has, so we can include it with the information we already have.”

Mr Disu pleaded with the faction spokesperson to come forward and file an official complaint to allow the police to conclude their investigation into the alleged attack.

“So far so good, nothing to worry about.

“My number is going to be made public so that they can call me quickly so that I can quickly investigate (the allegation).

“So far I have not received anything (complaints) of that type,” he added.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ehie was sworn in as president by lawmakers believed to be loyal to the governor. Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State.

Lawmakers had removed former Speaker Martins Amaewhule (Obio Akpor Constituency), a close ally of Fubara’s predecessor, Nyesom Wike, after he led some lawmakers to launch impeachment proceedings against the governor.

Amaewhule, however, insists that he remains the speaker of the Assembly.
