Dr. Shehu Aboki, Professor at the Department of Islamic Studies at Usmanu Danfodio University, Sokoto, says that Islam encourages polygamy to protect the dignity of women, save them from slavery and mistreatment by abusive husbands.
Aboki made the observation in a book launch titled: “A Room of Your Own; Transition from Monogamy to Polygamy in Islam ”, written by Hajiya Tawakaltu Yusuf, on Saturday in Sokoto.
Aboki explained that polygamy should also create harmony in society and ensure certainty in women’s lives, contrary to the misconceptions of non-Muslims.
He explained that Islam allows both monogamy and polygamy based on certain conditions.
“Polygamy and monogamy are allowed and practiced in Islam. If one can have peace in either of the two, Islam has granted such a practice.
“Furthermore, the Quran has specifically identified the conditions and directions of polygamy and monogamy to ensure peace between couples,” he said.
He commended the author for her foresight and attempt to educate society about the institution of marriage enshrined in the teachings of Islam.
The author, Tawakaltu Yusuf, said the book aimed to change negative narratives about polygamy.
“The book attempts to shed more light on the unusual stories of Muslims living wonderfully in polygamous families, against stereotypes of oppressed women.
“We want to lead a positive conversation in the community.
“It is intended to raise more awareness of the importance of emotional awareness, emotional intelligence, emotional and mental health in the Muslim community.
“Furthermore, it will serve as a wake-up call for Muslim men and women to fear Allah in their marriages and raise awareness in the community,” he said.
In a comment, Professor Amamatu Dahiru congratulated the author on her foresight in educating society about marriage.
Dahiru noted that the advice given to wives in the book will help all women to understand that polygamy is not a curse but a blessing if the marriage is not abusive.
“Without polygamy, a divorced or widowed woman will not remarry; that may be the end of your happiness.
“But with the mercy of Allah, polygamy is allowed in Islam to free women from slavery to be inherited as property and mistreatment from their abusive husbands, which means that they can divorce and remarry,” she said.
