… Buhari is in mourning

“Nigeria, indeed, the world has lost a public health expert,” said President Muhammadu Buhari upon receiving the news of the passing of Professor Adetokunbo Oluwole Lucas, OFR, at the age of 89.

The president sympathizes with family, friends, the medical community and academia for the approval of the world leader in health for Africa and winner of the award for his outstanding support of research on tropical diseases, especially malaria, bilharzia and leprosy.

Revealing this in a statement, Femi Adesina, special adviser to the president on media and advertising, said: President Buhari notes that as professor and head of the Department of Preventive and Social Medicine at the University College of London in Ibadan, (later University from Ibadan); Pioneering President of the Nigerian Medical Research Council; and president of the National Health Policy Commission, among other national positions, Professor Lucas undoubtedly left an indelible national mark.

According to the president, “Professor Lucas made a name for himself even beyond the shores of Nigeria,” while referring to his decade at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva as Director of Special Programs for Research and Development. Training in Tropical Diseases, as well as serving as professor of international health at Harvard University, Boston, and adjunct professor.

President Buhari urges the many alumni and admirers of the eminent scholar and researcher to build on the solid foundations established by Professor Lucas for national growth.

Pray to Almighty God to comfort all those who mourn the respected “teacher of teachers” and grant a peaceful rest to the soul of Professor Lucas.
