Professor Olayemi Durotimi Akinwumi has emerged as the new rector of the Federal University, (FUL) Lokoja.
At a short press conference in Lokoja on Friday, the chair of the selection committee, Senator Chris Adighiji, who is also pro-chancellor and chairman of the FUL board of directors, said the committee received 81 applications from potential qualified candidates for consideration. .
He said the selection committee submitted the applications to due process and shortlisted 20 names of the 81 applicants for the coveted position at the institution.
Explaining that the committee eliminated 17 of the 20 shortlisted candidates, he said that 16 of the 17 approved names appeared for the interview yesterday.
According to Senator Adighidi, after an intensive interview on Thursday, the committee recommended three candidates for the final selection: Professor Olayemi Durotimi Akinwunmi (Deputy Vice Chancellor of Nasarawa State University) from Kogi State, Professor Akintayo Emmanuel Temitokpe (state de Ekiti) and Professor Prekayi Tawari from Bayelsa State.
He said that at the end of all selection and pre-selection exercises, Professor Angela Miri, Professor Olayemi Durotimi Akinwunmi was unanimously appointed as a candidate for replacement.
The Pro-Chancellor and President of the Governing Board of the FUL said that the exercise that began in September was free of friction and was peaceful.
However, he said those who went to court are alone, stating that no one protested the result of the screening and that there was no court order from any court to stop the process.
