Simeone shoots red-hot Napoli twice against Rangers

Giovanni Simeone ensured Napoli retained top spot in Champions League Group A on Wednesday with a brace in his side’s comfortable 3-0 victory over Rangers.

Luciano Spalletti’s side extended their winning streak in all competitions to a club record 12 matches thanks to classy strikes from Simeone five minutes into the first half and a late header from Leo Ostigard.

Napoli, already through to the round of 16, remain three points ahead of Liverpool and will win the group provided they avoid a heavy defeat at Anfield next week.

Rangers are pointless after their fifth successive loss in the competition and can only reach the Europa League if they pull off the unlikely feat of beating Ajax by five goals in Glasgow.

Simeone is one of two Argentines to have scored four goals in their first four Champions League games, the other being his father Diego.

He opened the scoring in the 11th minute with an elegant low shot from a difficult angle after receiving a long ball from Giovanni Di Lorenzo from above.

And the 27-year-old scored again five minutes later with his sixth goal of the season, this time with a powerful header into the center from Mario Rui.

Ostigard ensured the scoreline reflected the one-sided nature of the match with a header of his own, this time scoring from a corner when completely unmarked on his Champions League debut.
