South African, Ghanaian films dominate shortlist

South African feature film ‘Surviving Gaza’ and Ghana’s ‘Borga’ have received the most nominations at the 2022 Africa Film Academy Awards.

Both films were nominated in 14 of the 26 AMAA categories.

Shaibu Husseini revealed this on behalf of Keith Shiri, president of the AMAA 2022 Jury, at a press event on Wednesday.

The event, which was attended by AMAA Founder and Executive Director, Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, was held at the Radisson Hotel in Ikeja, GRA, Lagos.

The award ceremony, which takes place in Lagos on October 30, aims to recognize and celebrate the African visual and storytelling creative industry.

Speaking at the event, Ms. Anyiam-Osigwe said that AMAA is not a popular vote film and film awards ceremony, but an awards ceremony strategically created to reward and celebrate professionalism in filmmaking and filmmaking across all The specters.

Organizers said the nomination was garnered from 362 entries trimmed to 100 after selection.

With 26 categories, Mr. Husseini Husseini also revealed that the jury was in session for more than ten days for the selection of documentary films, animations, feature films and short stories.

nigerian contenders

The organizers revealed that Nigerian films dominated 47 percent of the feature film submission and 50 percent of the short films.

Kunle Afolayan’s 2021 Netflix The title ‘Swallow’, Bolanle Austen Peters’ ‘Man of God’ in the Netflix original and Walter Waltbanger Taylaur’s ‘Jolly Roger’ are the top Nigerian contenders.

Osas Ighodaro, Deyemi Okanlawon, Nse Ikpe-Etim, Daniel Etim, Akah Nnani, Dorcas Shola-Fapson, Chibuike Josh Alfred popularly known as ‘Josh2funny’ were nominated in different categories.

In addition to the Nigerian contenders, other African nations such as Uganda, Tanzania, Ghana and Senegal weighed in on the list of nominees.

Tanzania’s ‘Tug of war’ follows closely behind with 12 nominations, while Uganda’s ‘Tembele’ and Nigeria’s ‘Man of God’ racked up nominations in nine categories. Nigeria’s ‘Jolly Roger’ also followed with nominations in eight different categories, while Kunle Afolayan’s ‘Swallow’ garnered nominations in seven categories.

Other top contenders at AMAA 2022 include ‘A Song of the Dark’ and ‘Angeliena’ with six nominations, with ‘Ayaanle’, ‘Almajiri’ and ‘Road to my father’s compound’ with 5 different categories, while ‘Alaise ‘, ‘Money miss road’ and ‘Underbelly’ garnered three different nominations each, and ‘Skin like mine’ and ‘Ba Ni’ garnered two nominations each.
