The defection of Ebonyi State Governor Dave Umahi from the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, to the Congress of All Progressives, APC, yesterday raised dust in the state and in the National Assembly as reports from more governors from the Southeast joined in he in the ruling party gained popularity.

Eight federal legislators from the state of Ebonyi disassociated themselves from Governor Umahi, who will formalize his defection from the APC today, saying that they would not abandon the main opposition PDP.

The National Work Committee of the PDP, NWC, which dissolved the state executive committee last night, raised an interim committee led by Hon Fred Udogu.

However, the chairman of the party’s dissolved state executive, Onyekachi Nwebonyi, insists that he is the legitimate chairman of the PDP in Ebonyi state and vowed to challenge the NWC’s decision in court.

PDP will cease to exist in Ebonyi today —Umahi

However, Governor Umahi, who will formalize his entry into the APC, today, the day that the National Executive Committee, NEC of the PDP will meet to discuss the Ebonyi episode and other issues, boasted yesterday that his departure will mark the end PDP in Salt state.

In a pre-desertion interview yesterday, Umahi, who insisted the PDP has treated the southeast unfairly since 1999, said, “tomorrow (today) will mark the end of the PDP in Ebonyi” because he has the support of the people. and PDP leaders at satte.

Governors elected on the APC platform and other top political actors and party leaders are expected to fly to Enugu today) before traveling to Abakaliki to witness their defection to the APC.

Umahi solo: Ebonyi NASS members

At a joint press conference on Wednesday in Abuja, members of the National Assembly, three senators and five members of the House of Representatives elected on the PDP platform said that Governor Umahi was alone.

The legislators are Senator Sam Ominyi Egwu, Senator Obinna Ogba, Senator Mike Ama Nnachi, Hon. Sylvester Ogbaga, Hon. Igariwey Iduma Enwo, Hon. Chukwuma Nwazunku, Hon. Edwin Anayo, and Hon. Livinus Makwe.

Senator Sam Egwu, the former governor of the state who now represents Ebonyi North, said that no member of the PPD, Ebonyi’s group from the National Assembly, would leave the party with Umahi.

We will stay in PDP: Ebonyi NASS members

They said: “We, the members of the Ebonyi State PPD National Assembly, wish to address our fellow PPD members and other well-meaning Nigerians on the defection of the Governor of Ebonyi State, PPD Chief David Umahi to the APC.

“For the sake of clarity, we wish to state that not a single member of the Ebonyi State PPD National Assembly is defecting to the APC. The three Distinguished Senators and the five members of the House of Representatives remain proud members of the PDP, the platform under which we contest and win the elections in 2019.

“The main reason given by Chief Umahi for defecting from the PDP to the APC is now in the public domain and is that the PDP has not been fair to the people of the Southeast on the issue of zoning the Presidency and Vice Presidency.

“While we support that it is the Southeast’s turn to wave the presidential flag of any of the major political parties in 2023, we consider it impolite, indecent and reckless to issue ultimatums and conditionalities in an attempt to secure zoning.” ‘

The Supreme Court decision on desertion may apply

“As Democrats, we grant Chief Umahl the right to join any political association of his choice. However, as federal legislators we do not ignore the Supreme Court decision that the candidates are products of political parties.

“What it means is that political office holders are not free to migrate from one political platform to another, particularly when there is no division in their party.”

Umahi’s departure won’t improve APC’s fortunes: Senate PDP Caucus

The PPD Senate Caucus said yesterday that it was not in any way disturbed by Governor Umahi’s defection, and said the measure would not harm the PPD or improve the APC’s lot.

Senate Minority Leader Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, PDP, Abia South, in a statement from his media adviser Uchenna Awom, said that Umahi’s departure “surely will not negatively affect the party or erode its membership, or enhance the luck of APC “. with the incorporation of Umahi to the party.

According to the statement, the PDP had known before that Governor Umahi was in his new party, APC in spirit, before his formal announcement on Tuesday. “Abaribe also blamed Governor Umahi’s reasons of injustice and lack of justice for leaving the PDP, saying that the PDP has been very fair to the Southeast since its inception.

The minority leader said: “It is not true and it is very regrettable that the governor characterizes the PDP in this way. The examples are legion, which shows that our beloved party has reciprocated in solidarity with the support of the Southeast, which means that the party is not taking the support of Ndi-Igbo for granted. It is inconceivable to perceive the position of presidential photographer that Ndi-Igbo currently occupies in the village as fairness ”.

Expect all Ebonyi NASS members at APC, says Chinedu Ogah

The only member of the Ebonyi State APC National Assembly, Comrade Chinedu Ogah, said his colleagues from the state would soon follow Governor Umahi’s line.

Ogah, who represents the Ikwo / Ezza-South federal constituency in the House of Representatives, said: “I think everyone will come together. There is no cause for alarm for anyone to flex their muscles. There is no reason to fight, what they should be talking about is conscience. What were they before now? Would they have gone to the National Assembly without the effort of the governor?

Two leaderships emerge in Ebonyi PDP

Meanwhile, a major leadership feud is rocking the Ebonyi PDP as the former disbanded state co, led by Onyekachi Nwebonyi, claims he is still on board.

The NWC has announced that a new state executive led by Hon Fred Udogu will take over as the Oversight Committee.

A statement from the PDP National Publicity Secretary Kola Ologbondiyan read: “Following the dissolution of the Ebonyi State Exco of our great party, the National Labor Committee has constituted a state interim committee to steer the party’s affairs in the state. of Ebonyi in accordance with the provisions of the PDP constitution.

”The Ebonyi State Interim Committee members are Hon Fred Udeogu, President, Barr Luke Nkwegu, Secretary, Dr. Gideon Osi, Advertising Secretary, Hon James Alaka, Organizing Secretary, Ms. Amaka Igboke, Women’s Leader, Barr Mudi Irenede, Legal Counsel, Barr. Ibeshi, youth leader.

The NWC’s decision in this regard is in accordance with the powers conferred on it by the provisions of the PDP Constitution (2017 as amended).

With members of the interim committee expected to take office shortly, the Nwebonyi-led PDP said: “We are duly elected and we cannot be removed simply by a simple pronouncement. It is a court of competent jurisdiction that can remove us. We are duly chosen. We are in charge. “

We will go to court to challenge NWC’s decision —Nwebonyi

In fact, Nwebonyi insisted that the dissolution of the SWC was against the party constitution, adding that: “We were duly elected in accordance with the party constitution, and any action on state executives must conform to the provisions of the constitution. of the PDP “.

Challenges await you, Ohanaeze, tells PDP

Meanwhile, the Igbo socio-political organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, and the Pan-Nigerian Presidential Coalition of Igbo Extraction, PANPIEC, have lampooned the PDP following Umahi’s defection.

Ohanaeze Ndigbo’s Undersecretary of Publicity, Mr. Chuks Ibegbu, said that although Ohanaeze Ndigbo was not a political team, he is interested in Ndigbo’s political interests and rights and will support any movement that improves it.

“Umahi made this decision after several efforts to see his old party do what was necessary and they were still wasting time. It is not too late for the PDP to do the right thing. Umahi is an Igbo patriot and should be commended for defending the political integrity of his politically marginalized people. There should be no fuss on the matter because whoever wears the shoe knows where they are pinching it, ”said Ibegbu.

Additionally, PANPIEC Director of Planning and Strategy Chief Pat Anyanwu said the PDP should now know that without zoning its presidential ticket to Igboland, it will face many challenges in the 2023 general election.

I have no plans to leave APGA for APC

Meanwhile, Anambra State Governor Willie Obiano has dismissed reports that he was planning to join Umahi in APC.

A source close to the progressive All Grand Alliance APGA in Anambra state, who described Umahi’s defection as a wise decision, said that as soon as possible, Obiano, who is serving his second term in office, will also announce his defection from APGA to APC “because the Anambra Governor firmly believes that the political future of the southeastern region is more guaranteed in the ruling APC, than the main opposition party, the PDP, which alleged it has not been fair to the area since 1999.”

According to the source, after his permanent consultation, Governor Obiano will inform Anambarians and Ndigbo about his next line of political action.

Yesterday, Mr. James Eze, chief press secretary of the Anambra governor, said that the report is false and that Obiano has no plans to leave the APGA.

“This is not true. People keep making this claim. I have issued disclaimers to such reports many times. There is no truth to that. Governor Obiano is not in the same position as Governor Umahi, who was from the PDP. He Governor Obiano leads the APGA, a unique party in the southeast, which wants to strengthen the interests of the area ”.

With Umahi, I envision a brighter future for democracy —Buhari

Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari, last night, said that he envisioned a brighter future for the nation’s democracy with Umahi’s defection to the APC.

The president said he was proud of Governor Umahi’s bold decision to get rid of the PPD in accordance with his conscience and principles rather than any outside influence or coercion. “Buhari, in a statement by his senior special assistant in media and publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu said that although the people might insult the governor, it was the price that men of principle had to pay for acting according to their conscience and convictions, rather than opportunistic motives.

“I am proud of Governor David Umahi for making this bold decision in accordance with his conscience and principles rather than any outside influence or coercion.

“Good governance is very important to us at APC, and I am pleased that the Governor cited this as an important factor in his decision to join us. I urge our citizens to put less emphasis on identity politics if we want our democracy to have a positive impact on our country, ”he said.

He noted that “with men like Umahi, I envision a brighter future for our democracy because voters will be more motivated by the performance records of the parties and their candidates.”
