Defense Headquarters has disassociated itself from any undemocratic discourse and position, as well as pledging allegiance to President Muhammadu Buhari and the amended 1999 Constitution.

Acting Director, Defense Information, Brigadier General. Onyema Nwachukwu stated this in a statement Monday in Abuja.

Nwachukwu said that the attention of the military high command had been drawn to a statement suggesting that the current political leadership should hand over power to the military for the purpose of restructuring it.

He said the statement was allegedly made by a Nigerian Senior Counsel (SAN), Robert Clark.

“The Nigerian army wishes to disassociate itself from such an undemocratic statement and position.

“Let it be categorically stated that the Nigerian Armed Forces remain fully committed to the current Administration and all associated democratic institutions.
“We will remain apolitical, subordinate to the Civil Authority, firmly loyal to the President, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari and the 1999 Constitution as amended.

“We will continue to fulfill our constitutional responsibilities in a professional manner, especially in protecting the country’s democracy, defending the country’s territorial integrity, and protecting the lives and property of citizens,” he said.

The defense spokesman also warned that the military high command would not tolerate misguided politicians who fuel the unbridled ambition to rule the country outside the polls.

He said that Defense Headquarters would advise those politicians to banish such thoughts, adding that the military under the current leadership remains determined in the defense of the nation’s democracy and its growth.

“We also wish to remind all military personnel that it is treason to even contemplate this illegality.

“The full wrath of the law will be applied to any personnel found in collusion with people who have that agenda.

“Today’s security challenges are not insurmountable as the military, in partnership with other security agencies, is working assiduously to improve the challenge.

“Nigeria will know peace again,” he told himself.
