Tinubu arrives in New York for his first visit to the UN General Assembly

President Tinubu Ball has arrived in New York for the high-level meetings of the 78th session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) UN correspondent reports that Tinubu arrived at New York’s JF Kennedy International Airport at around 6:45 pm local time on Sunday.

The president is leading the Nigerian delegation that will attend the scheduled general assembly events from September 18 to 26, in what will be his first outing as president of Nigeria.

The President was received by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, the Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the UN, Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, and Dangana Allu, Defense Attaché of Nigeria in Washington DC

Tinubu’s reception departed from the usual tradition of officials queuing up at the airport to greet the president.


This time, only three officials were at the airport to receive the president and the other Nigerian officials stationed at the UN Plaza Millenium Hilton Hotel to welcome him.

Those who were at the hotel to welcome him were the Nigerian ambassador to the United States, Uzoma Emenike; the Consul General of Nigeria in New York, Lot Egopija; and the Consul General in Atlanta, Amina Samaila.

Others are Governors Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State; Seyi Makinde of Oyo; Uba Sani of Kaduna; Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe; and AbdulRahman AbdulRasaq of Kwara, among others.

Tinubu, in his inaugural address to the Assembly, will address world leaders on Tuesday afternoon, around 6 pm local time.

The Nigerian leader will be the fifth African leader to speak on the first day of the meeting and the 14th speaker of the 20 leaders scheduled to speak on Tuesday.

Mr Tinubu’s speech will cover various issues such as sustainable development, climate change, global cooperation and the imperative of addressing inequalities and global humanitarian crises.

On Wednesday, the Nigerian president is scheduled to participate in the high-level dialogue on financing for development.

You will attend a high-level meeting on Pandemic Prevention, Preparedness and Response.

On Thursday he will participate in the UN Secretary-General’s Climate Ambition Summit and attend a high-level meeting on Universal Health Coverage.

He is also expected to join another high-level panel on reforming the global financial architecture.

On Friday he will attend the high-level meeting on the fight against tuberculosis.

During the week, Tinubu is scheduled to hold several bilateral meetings with world leaders, including the presidents of the European Union Commission, Brazil and South Africa, among others.

It will also advance its economic development agenda to aggressively attract investments in meetings with global leaders of transnational companies.

Those companies include Microsoft, Meta Technologies, Exxon Mobil, General Electric and a few others.

The theme of the United Nations General Assembly is: “Rebuilding trust and reviving global solidarity: accelerating action on the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals towards peace, prosperity, progress and sustainability for all.
