The 19th African Film Academy Awards, held on Sunday, October 29, will continue to be memorable for attendees, film and media professionals and winners.
At the awards ceremony that featured Camidoh from Ghana, KCee from Nigeria and the talented Yinka Davies serenading the nominees, African film enthusiasts and professionals, Tobi Bakre and Nse Ikpe Etim from Nigeria won big awards of the night for their roles in ‘Gangs of Lagos’ and ‘4.4.44’ respectively.
Other films that won different categories include Senegal’s ‘Xale’, which won in the Best Film and Best Costume Design categories; Kunle Afolayan’s ‘Anikulapo’, which won Best African Language Film and Best Production Design, as well as CJ ‘Fiery’ Obasi’s ‘Mami Water’, which won Best Cinematography.

The 2023 edition of the film awards ceremony was held at the Balmoral Convention Centre, Ikeja GRA, Lagos, hosted by Nancy Isime, Rahama Sadau and Richard Ato Turkson.
Reflexes
Other highlights of the show include the moving tribute to the late AMAA founder, Peace Marie Ogechi Anyiam-Osigwe, who passed away in January 2023.
The moving tribute left several members of the Anyiam-Osigwe clan in tears, as well as AMAA jury members, attendees and other film professionals.
Speaking at the event, Raymond Anyiam-Osigwe, board director of AFA’s AMAA owners, promised that the family will carry on the legacy of the late Peace Anyiam-Osigwe, who impacted the film industry and African filmmakers before of his death. .
He highlighted that preparations have already begun for the twentieth edition of AMAA and promised to continue with the alliances that have been created and made since the creation of the continental film award.
The continental awards ceremony also featured performances by Nigerian Idol superstar, Zadok, who left attendees and guests asking for more with his excellent performance.
Other notable victories
Also flying high the Nigerian flag with films by Nigerians, Jude Idada’s ‘Kofa’ won the Film by an African Abroad category.
The Cameroonian documentary ‘Le Specter de Boko Haram’ also won the Best Documentary award, while ‘Lions’ and ‘Jabari’ won in the Best Short Film and Best Animation categories.
Another highlight of the night was the honor given to veteran actor Charles Olumo, also known as Agbako. He was honored with a lifetime achievement award for his contribution to the Nigerian film industry as an actor with over 50 years of experience.
The event was attended by the current Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Toke Benson-Awoyinka, former Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Pharmacist Uzamat Akinbile-Yussuf, George Anyiam-Osigwe, Raymond Anyiam-Osigwe and Cometa Anyiam-Osigwe.
Also in attendance was the jury led by Keith Shiri, Shaibu Husseini, Steve Ayorinde and several film professionals including Jimmy Jean-Louis, Bimbo Manuel, Kunle Afolayan, Odunlade Adekola, Ngozi Nwosu, Charles Otudor and Ralph Nwadike.
Others are Bimbo AdemoyeIbinabo Fiberesima, Tony Akposeri, Osita Iheme, Chinedu Ikedieze, Foluke Daramola-Salako, Enyinna Nwigwe, Fred Amata, Segun Arinze, Seun Soyinka, Clarion Chukwurah, Papa Ajasco and several others.
