Professor Lukumon Oyedele, Associate Vice Chancellor of the University of the West of England, Bristol, has said that ineffective governance and leaders and outdated curriculum are the reasons Nigerian universities cannot meet the world.
The University Don said that a Nigerian university only manages to rank 500 positions among its peers in the world.
Professor Oyedele lamented that government policies and structural problems are the main problems undermining the university system in Nigeria.
He made the remarks while delivering a lecture on “Internationalization of Higher Education in Nigeria: A Change in Attitude and Strategy”, during the second annual Prince Tunde Ponnle conference held at Osun State University, Main Campus, Osogbo.
Professor Oyedele, however, explained that the introduction of university autonomy would help each institution determine its standard and manage its resources.
He further said that each university will employ staff based on merit and not connections.
“The role of the government will simply be to monitor and ensure accountability within the university system. Not working and continuing to get paid is a panacea for failure and the future strike, ”he said.
The invited speaker further stated that competency-based appointments and performance-based management can go a long way toward boosting college performance.
