Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State.

Imo State Executive Governor Senator Hope Uzodinma on Friday called for true leadership and patriotism to promote national security and sustainable development.

Uzodinma, who made the call in Abuja while delivering a lecture on “Promoting National Security and Sustainable Development, said that only honest and transparent leadership can inspire patriotism in citizens.

According to him, it is only through good and incorruptible governance that state resources could be judiciously applied to provide education, employment and infrastructure for people to reduce social tension and, in turn, improve security.

The first is through good governance, which must be incorruptible, as exemplified by President Buhari.

“It is only through good and incorruptible governance that state resources can be judiciously applied to provide education, employment and infrastructure for people, which will reduce social tension and, in turn, improve security.

”It is also only an honest and transparent governance that can inspire the necessary patriotic zeal in citizens for the love of the country and their fellow citizens.

“Patriotism breeds love for the country and love for the country breeds love for fellow citizens and love for fellow citizens abhors violence and insurgency,” he said.

The governor explained that it was necessary for the political class to make a deep examination of the soul and repent.

“If all the political leaders of the country can preach peaceful coexistence and tolerance, the long journey to a peaceful and safe Nigeria would be drastically shortened.

According to him, transparent and honest leadership could inspire patriotism, which is open source and the solution to our security problems.

“We all have a role to play for the good of our country.

“We peoples recognize that we have responsibility, as well as rights, that our destinies are linked, that a freedom that only asks what is for me, a freedom without commitment to others, a freedom without love or charity, or duty or patriotism, is unworthy of our founding ideals, and those who died in its defense.

“And if we ever forget that we are a nation under God, then we will be a sunken nation,” concluded Uzodimma, quoting Charles de Gaulle and Barak Obama.
