His parents taught him and his brothers to have confidence in themselves, but not to think of themselves as exceptional in any way. In his idyllic childhood, he grew up on a 2000-hectare farm where he spent his weekends fishing and riding his trail bike around the property. As of right now, the Travis Fimmel brothers are doing well for themselves. They are both employed as miners in Western Australia, and each of them is the father of two children.
After graduating from a local high school, he went on to study Project Management at RMIT University in Melbourne.
Fimmel relocated to Melbourne to play for the St Kilda Football Club in the Australian Football League, but he was forced to miss the start of the season due to a broken leg. Afterwards, he dropped out of RMIT University in order to travel the world. Chadwick Models Agency discovered Travis Fimmel while he was exercising at a local gym in Hawthorn, a Melbourne suburb. He was immediately signed by the agency and began his modeling career the following year. After that, he relocated to London. For a number of years, he worked as a bartender in addition to modeling. He met David Seltzer, his future manager, while drinking in one of these establishments. David encouraged young Fimmel to relocate to Los Angeles in order to pursue a modeling and acting career with a major agency.
In 2002, Fimmel was approached by LA Models and offered a modeling contract. He then signed a six-figure contract with Calvin Klein to model exclusively for the company for a year. He has appeared in advertisements for Gap and L’Oreal, as well as on the covers of numerous magazines, including: At Large, Rogue, JON Magazine, Numero Homme, W Magazine. In 2002, the American magazine People named him one of the World’s Sexiest Bachelors, and he has maintained that position ever since. In 2003, he made his television debut as Tarzan, a character from the series Tarzan. Since then, he has appeared in more than 30 different productions on stage and screen. He is best known for his role as Ragnar Lothbrok in the television series Vikings. The death of Ragnar in Vikings season four prompted Travis to take a break from the acting industry. Travis is back on television after a brief hiatus, this time in the science fiction epic Raised by Wolves. In an interview with The Washington Post, the actor mentioned the following:
“I was never going to do TV again [after ‘Vikings’]…I just didn’t want to commit to something so long. But because of Ridley’s involvement, I kind of had no choice. I just said ‘yes’ without reading the script. Ridley is such an iconic filmmaker, it’s an actor’s dream.”
Travis told PEOPLE about his collaboration with Ridley, saying,
“I’m not a Sci-fi guy, so it’s intriguing. I didn’t need a pitch, Ridley asked me to do it and I was like, ‘Yeah, of course.’ Then I read the script, it’s very unique. He’s such a visionary, and I think it’s something no one has seen on TV before. He’s so creative. He puts you in an amazing world and he’s such a nice guy I loved working with him.”
Travis has previously stated that he prefers to act in films rather than television series:
“Quite often [in television] you’ve got to sign a thing for 6 years, and that’s a big chunk of your life to do the same thing. I’d rather do different things. There’s some great storytelling on TV because of the time you get to follow characters’ journeys. But yeah, I’d rather do a film and then go away and never have to do that one character again.”
