Rapidly rising singer Oghenerukewe Olotu, also known as Ruky Olotu, rose to fame in 2014 when she emerged as the first runner-up on the reality show Project Fame.

In 2018, he released an EP titled Brave Love. He later took a break from music only to return this year with a new single, Voodoo Love. In this interview, Olotu opens up about his interregnum and how he intends to penetrate the highly competitive music industry.

You took a break from music and now you’re back. So why did you leave the scene?

So many things happened in my life, so I wanted to define what I really wanted to do and be safe too. When I took a break, I was also trying to get additional work. While I was waiting for that, I had to go back to what I really love to do, which is music.

Tell us about your latest single, Voodoo Love.

My latest single, Voodoo Love, was released about two months ago. It is currently played on various radio stations and also has thousands of streams on Spotify. People now go to the YouTube page to watch the video. Interestingly, people who have listened to the song so far said they liked it. It encourages me more to do more.

How would you define your type of music?

I will define my music as Neo-Soul Afro-Pop. It’s more of an eccentric kind of sound that is still in touch with my base, which is Africa and which is also Nigeria.

How do you plan to penetrate and make waves in the saturated music industry?

I have to find a way to define myself that is different from Tiwa Savage and Yemi Alade etc. I definitely don’t want to sound like them. I want mine to be a new kind of sound. So I took some time to experiment with different sounds. I try not to sound like different artists even if I was inspired by them.

Who are your mentors in the industry?

I like a couple of artists; I like them because they inspire my sound to grow. Long ago my mentors used to be Brandy, Whitney Houston, Beyonce, etc. But now, I am tuning in to the new sounds of Jhene Aiko, Ceaser and Tems.

What are your challenges?

The challenge could be to get people to like your music; not so easy in that regard, and then finance. Those are the two main challenges in addition to the socio-economic or security situation in the country.

Where do we hope to see Ruky in the next five years?

I pray that my songs will sound all over the world. I am invited to perform in various countries. I see that my music reaches very far and that people transmit it.

Is there anything else you want the world to know about Ruky?

There are so many things that I would like to do besides music. I love to dance and I love to act. I hope I can show the world that side of me.
