The monarch, conferring the title of chieftain on Senator Ngige’s weekend, said the gesture was in recognition of the good works that Ngige did during his 34-month term as governor of Anambra state, especially in the Awka community. The minister, while appreciating the bestowal, prayed that God would bless the title for him to wear and work for Anambra state and Nigeria.
Speaking about why he fought the godfather in the country, he said: “I decided to work for the people because that was the heart of the problem. Will you stand up and work for the people or the godparents? So, I supported people and worked for them.
“Until now, Awka was a village, but we transformed the village into a proper capital. We brought infrastructure development and introduced reforms in the public service. We paved all the roads of the GRA Awka. We dualized Nnamdi Azikiwe Road and put streetlights on them. We repaired the water system and put water into operation for three quarters.
“We also improve electricity. The Agu Awka power station with a large 60KVA sub-injector station was brought in during my time as governor to supplement the Nibo power station and we had electricity here in Awka.
We installed the Ngozika urbanization. We did the Urbanization for workers.
“We brought CBN to Awka. Earlier, land grabbers like people who claim to be fighting for the traditional Awka government had taken the land from CBN, but we took it back and returned it to CBN. I also reclaimed the land near the gulf course from the land grabbers and handed it over to NNPC and they brought us a mega station here in Awka. All of these things made Awka a proper state capital. These were the few things we were able to do in 34 months. ”
Earlier, the occasion’s president and former Anambra state governor, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, urged Ndigbo not to abandon his culture and tradition.
