Nigerian police on Friday said it would be very difficult for the force to dissolve the operations and activities of the special anti-theft squad, SARS.
As Channels Tv host, Frank Mba, PRO Forces, gave reasons why Nigerians should stop protesting the dissolution of SARS.
Speaking confidently, Mba said: “If the #EndSARS hashtag is seen as a symbolic call for SARS reform, it would clearly say that the NPF leadership is online and ready to work with those who make that call.
“However, if the hashtag were seen as a call for the total dissolution of SARS, it would tell you very clearly that it will be difficult for any responsible organization to work down that path, considering the amount of investment in training that the government has made in the creation of that department and the very critical roles it is playing.
“In fact, we have received many calls from people, particularly in states like Maiduguri, Yobe and some other parts of the north where SARS agents are deeply rooted in the fight against banditry and insurgency.
“And these people have made it very clear that ending SARS is not even an option for them because of the critical roles that SARS agents are playing in those areas, mainly bandits, terrorists and other types of criminals.
Emphasizing the need to retain SARS, Mba opined that: “There are people who are beneficiaries of criminal enterprises. “Some of them are probably people who are receiving stolen goods; who are involved in organized crime, such as arms smuggling, the illicit movement of arms, the importation of drugs and other types of economically motivated crimes ”.
