… He claims he got more votes than the appointed emir

By Ibrahim Hassan

A prince of the Emirate of Zazzau in Kaduna state, Iyan Zazzau, Bashiru Aminu, has gone to court to challenge the appointment of Ahmed Nuhu-Bamalli as the new Emir of Zazzau, by Governor Nasiru el-Rufai.

Bamalli succeeded Dr. Shehu Idris, who died on September 20, 2020 at the Kaduna military hospital.

However, in a lawsuit filed yesterday with the Kaduna State High Court, Aminu asked the court to declare that, “having obtained the highest number of legitimate votes cast by the kingmakers and, therefore, selected by those kingmakers of kings, has acquired the right to the stool of the Emir of Zazzau from the date of his selection onwards. “

According to a copy of the complaint made available to journalists, the complainant joined Governor el-Rufai; Kaduna State Attorney General; Kaduna Council of Heads of State; Council of the Emirate of Zazzau; Wazirin Zazzau, Ibrahim Aminu; Fagachin Zazzau, Umaru Muhammad; Mohammad Abbas, Makama Karamin Zazzau; Dalhatu Kasimu Imam, Limamin Juma’an Zazzau; Mohammad Sani Aliyu, Limamin Konan Zazzau; Emb. Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli as the first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth, ninth and tenth defendants in the lawsuit.

The suit seeks; “A statement that the plaintiff is still the Emir of Zazzau and has all corresponding rights and privileges. An order annulling the alleged appointment of the tenth accused (Ambassador Ahmad Nuhu Bamalli) as Emir of Zazzau;

“A court order prohibiting the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th defendant from acting in the installation of the tenth defendant on the throne of the Emir of Zazzau or from presenting themselves to the tenth defendant with the office staff until the final determination of this lawsuit;

“A perpetual court order restricting the accused, whether by themselves, agents, latrines, servants or through any person or persons, from treating, presenting or dealing with or installing the tenth accused as Emir of Zazzau;

“A perpetual court order prohibiting the tenth defendant from parading, posing or posing as the Emir of Zazzau or donning or wearing any paraphernalia or insignia of the Emir of Zazzau.”

On September 25, the kingmakers of the Zazzau Emirate, chaired by the Wazirin Zazzau, Ibrahim Aminu, had sent a list of three short-listed princes to Governor El-Rufai for consideration and appointment of a new Emir.

The shortlisted candidates were Bashir Aminu, Iyan Zazzau, who scored 89 points; Munir Jafaru, Yariman Zazzau who obtained 87 marks and; Aminu Shehu Idris, Turakin Zazzau who scored 53 points.
