Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey defended the platform’s decision to verify Donald Trump’s tweets after Facebook chief Mark Zuckerberg questioned the move.
Earlier this week, Twitter added fact-check tags to two tweets by the President of the United States that made unsubstantiated claims about the “fraudulent” postal vote in the United States.
Trump threatened to “shut down” social media sites in response, claiming they are biased against him and other conservative voices.
Zuckerberg has now also weighed in on the argument, telling Fox News that Facebook had a different approach and that private companies like social media sites should not be the “arbiter of truth.”
“I firmly believe that Facebook should not be the arbiter of the truth of everything that people say online,” he said. “Private companies probably shouldn’t be, especially these platform companies, in the position to do that.”
Facebook has come under fire for its approach in the past, with critics suggesting that the site has allowed misinformation to spread under the guise of freedom of expression.
