Shakira, the ex-girlfriend of Gerard Pique, will likely go to prison: As a result of a tax scam involving 14.5 million euros, Shakira, who was once in a relationship with Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, faces the possibility of doing eight years in prison.

Shakira, a Colombian musician, is accused of neglecting to pay taxes in Spain between the years of 2012 and 2014 and a Spanish prosecutor is seeking a jail sentence for her. During this time period, Shakira claims she was not living in Spain. According to a document from the public prosecutor’s office that was obtained by Reuters, Shakira had a regular residence in Spain during the years 2012 and 2014. She made the acquisition of a home in Barcelona in May of 2012, and she and her partner Pique have been using it ever since to bring up their child, who was born there in 2013. After Pique and Shakira’s 11-year relationship came to an end in June, Pique moved out of the home they shared with Shakira and their two children, Milan and Sasha, and into a separate apartment about four months later. Shakira is 45 years old.

Shakira, who is also known as the Queen of Latin Pop, claims that she has no outstanding tax debt and that she paid the 17.2 million euros that the Spanish tax agency claimed she owed. The agency had stated that Shakira owed the money. When Shakira’s agents were contacted for a response on the subject, they referred to a previous statement that had been issued on Wednesday that said she “is totally certain of her innocence.” In addition to this, they stated that the Colombian singer saw the situation as “a complete breach of her rights.”

In the event that she is found guilty, the prosecutor has asked for a sentence of eight years in prison in addition to a fine that is greater than €23 million. There is currently no set time for the trial to begin. The musician turned down a settlement offer from the prosecutor’s office earlier this week, which would have brought an end to the legal proceeding. The terms of the proposed settlement have not been made public at this time.

Classics such as “Hips Don’t Lie,” “Beautiful Liar,” and “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” have helped Shakira sell more than 80 million records around the world. “Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)” was the official song of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which was hosted in South Africa.
