• Eager to deny them the role in the new leadership selection
As the Democratic Party of the Peoples (PDP) prepares for its long -awaited national convention in Kano, the elders and the interested parties of the party urged politicians who plan to desert the ruler Congress of all progressives (APC) to do so without delay.
The main sources within the PDP told The Sunday Tribune that the party's leadership would prefer a “clean slate” before the convention, especially in the light of recent high -profile defections and continuous speculation over others that can soon do the same.
Concern, they say privileged information is that those who are not committed to the future of the party should not be able to influence the process of choosing a new national executive.
“Whoever wants to leave must leave now because we do not want them to have any contribution in leadership. They can even fool us anyway,” said a founding member of the party, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
“We want a new leadership that is not linked to the ambitions or manipulations of those who plan to betray the party.”
The warning occurs in the midst of the deepening of internal tensions about the drop -out of the governor of the state of Delta, Sheriff Oborevwori, to the APC, an exit that the PDP has chosen publicly minimizing, despite the signal that sends a diminished influence in some sectors.
While it is rumored that more defections are imminent, even between legislators and alumni, the interested parties of the PDP insist that numbers alone do not guarantee political success.
“In 2015, we had most state governors and we still lost the presidential elections,” said a senior official.
According to him, what Nigeria needs is not a dominant state of a single party, but a truly competitive democracy.
“The number of governors is irrelevant. What matters is to preserve multi -party democracy. We can be in trouble now, but should we give in to the dictatorship? No. It is worth fighting for democracy.”
The next convention of the party is considered a crucial moment to reposition the PDP before the general elections of 2027.
Experts say that the objective is to choose a credible national leadership with a reformist mentality that reconnects with the bases and will rebuild public trust.
Despite the setbacks, PDP leaders are still challenging in the face of the growing APC dominance, which has been helped by a wave of defections and political realignments since President Bola Tinubu assumed the position in 2023. However, many within the party argue that a house purged with Ferio climate allies is better equipped to recover and offer a pleasant alternative in the next electoral cycle.
As an old man said, “it is better that we face our storm now than later. Those who want to leave must leave. Those who stay should be ready to rebuild.”
After the recent desertion of Delta's interested parties to APC, PDP had declared its intention to challenge in court what he described as the trade of his electoral mandates in the state.
This was part of the resolutions achieved at a meeting of the National Labor Committee (NWC), chaired by the Interim National President, Ambassador Iliya Damagum, in the National Secretariat PDP in Abuja last week.
The leadership of the party condemned massive defections as a betrayal of the people's mandate and promised to initiate legal and political measures to claim their lost terrain.
In a decisive movement to reaffirm the control over its delta structure, the NWC had addressed the South-South Zonal Caregroad Committee, led by Chief Emma Ogidi, to take care of the matters of the party in the State.
The zonal agency received instructions to temporarily relocate to the State of Delta, inventory of party assets and guarantee the continuity of PDP operations waiting for the appointment of a complete caregiver committee.
