A group of defense media in Akwa Ibom, the forum of journalists of the Senatorial District Eket, has asked the Federal Government to do everything within its power to restore public security and confidence to guarantee the safety of the citizens of Nigeria.
The group's call followed the kidnapping of a renowned communication scholar of the University of Uyo, Professor Herbert Batta, along the Owerri axis in the state of Imo on Tuesday, May 6, 2025.
Our correspondent reports that Professor Batta, of the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies at the University of UYO, was kidnapped while returning from academic participation. Although he regained his early freedom on Wednesday on May 7, the reports suggest that other victims were not so lucky.
Reacting to the incident, the president of the group, Comrade Edet Okpo, described the situation as a “painful reflection” of the deteriorated security of the nation, and added that the freedom of movement guaranteed by the Constitution is reduced more and more due to crime without control.
“We are relatively relieved that Professor Batta left alive and without running. But it's not just a person. Nigerians are being kidnapped on roads, in their homes and even river roads. This must stop,” he said.
The group also condemned what it called the “tolerable laxity” of the government by addressing insecurity. Citing the recent kidnapping of more than 20 passengers in a boat that travels from Oron to Calabar during the Easter period, which remains missing, warned that any part of the country is safe.
“While authorities often dismiss these acts such as the work of 'unknown armed men', we challenge the government to unmask these criminals and restore public confidence. The Constitution is clear: the protection of lives and property rests directly with the government,” said Okpo.
Requesting sustainable solutions instead of rhetoric, the group urged all levels of government to take decisive measures against kidnapping and bandit.
“A time stitch saves nine. Enough late apologies and sensational comments. Nigerians deserve real security,” the statement warned.
