Cardoso appointed governor of the Central Bank in Africa

The governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Olayemi Cardoso, has been appointed governor of the year of the Central Bank at the African banker Awards Gala of 2025, held in Abidjan, Ivory Coast. Wednesday, May 28, 2025.

The award, which took place on Wednesday, was presented by the African Banker magazine, in recognition of the “bold and strategic” leadership of Cardoso in the direction of monetary and regulatory reforms that have restored the stability and confidence in the financial system of Nigeria, according to the organizers of the event.

In a statement, the Awards Committee praised the Central Bank of Nigeria under Cardoso for implementing key policy measures aimed at stabilizing Naira, improving transparency in the currency market and restoring the credibility of the policy.

The Committee said that these efforts have laid the foundations for long -term macroeconomic resilience and the renewed investor's confidence.

Dr. Nkiru Balonwu, advisor to the governor on participation of interested parties and strategic communication, accepted the prize in his name.

It was accompanied on stage by the Bank Director, the Department of Monetary Policy, Dr. Victor Oboh, and the director of the Banking Supervision Department, Dr. Olubukola Akinwumi.

Later they joined a member of the Bank Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), Dr. Aloysius Uche Ordu.

“The prize reflects the recognition of the Committee of the recent achievements of the Cardoso Governor and the critical role of the Central Bank to address market imbalances and reposition the Nigerian economy for sustainable growth,” the organizers said.

Now in its 19th year, Banker African Awards are organized by African Banker magazine with the African Development Bank group as its official pattern.

The annual event attracts senior figures from government, banking and development institutions throughout the continent to celebrate excellence in African finances.
