In an attempt to address the global threat of climate change, the Kogi State Assembly Chamber has begun a state treate planting campaign aimed at promoting environmental sustainability and reversing the effects of deforestation.

Speaking at the displacement ceremony, the speaker of the house, Rt. Excmo Umar Yusuf, emphasized the importance of the tree planting initiative in the creation of a safer and healthier environment for current and future generations.

“Our goal is to ensure that we have a safe and habitable environment for all. Climate change has contributed to erosion and other environmental challenges that threaten our communities. Through this symbolic campaign of tree planting, we are encouraging all communities to adopt environmental administration,” said the speaker.

He pointed out that the exercise represents the commitment of the assembly of leading with the example and inspiring residents to take possession of the land through responsible environmental practices.

“Deforestation and environmental degradation have become serious problems. As leaders, we must promote trees as a means of recovery of the earth and ecological balance,” he added.

In efforts to stop illegal deforestation, Yusuf revealed that the State has existing laws to address such violations and urged the forest department of the Ministry of Agriculture to make them rigorously.

“We have established laws to regulate deforestation. The forest department is empowered to stop and prosecute people who participate in the felling of trees without adequate authorization. We urge the ministry to intensify the application to protect our forests,” he said.

The speaker also praised the agroclimatic resilience in the semi -arid (acresal) landscape project to support the planting of trees in Kogi and empower farmers with economic trees species.

“In various parts of the state, we have seen farms with economic trees.

The campaign is expected to extend all areas of the local government, with an active participation of communities, environmental groups and government agencies.
