The Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NIMET) has published its crucial sudden flood risk alert for July 2025, warning that numerous states throughout the country face different probable risks of experiencing sudden flood events as the start of the rain intensifies.
This sudden flood warning is aligned with the previous seasonal climatic prediction (SCP) of Nimet for the year, which causes an urgent call for national preparation.
According to an infographic published on Nimet's social networks on Monday, the state of Sokoto has been identified as a high -risk area for sudden floods this month.
In addition, many other states appear with a remarkable risk of sudden floods. These include: Kaduna, Zamfara, Yobe, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Jigawa, Adamawa, Taraba, Niger, Nasarawa, Benue, Ogun, Ondo, Lagos, Delta, Edo, Cross River, Rivers and Akwa Ibom.
In the light of these growing predictions, Nimet has issued a series of vital notices aimed at mitigating the potential impacts of sudden floods and the protection of public safety.
The agency firmly urged residents to clear all drainage systems around their homes and communities to guarantee the flow of water without obstacles. In addition, the public is advised to vehement that avoids conducting or walking through flooded areas, since currents can be misleading and hidden hazards may raise significant hazards.
“The sudden flood risk alert for July 2025 shows states with different probable risks to experience sudden flood events as a result of the installation of rain appearance throughout the country as predicted in the seasonal climate prediction of NIMET (SCP) and some notices to mitigate its impacts,” said the TNE agency.
Nimet also recommended that people residing in low areas or those identified as high risk consider being relocated in safer terrain if warnings are emitted.
Households are encouraged to prepare an emergency kit, ensuring that they have essential items such as non -perishable foods, water, first aid supplies, a flashlight and an available energy bank. In the unfortunate case of floods, it is vital importance to turn off all electricity and gas supplies to avoid electrocution and possible explosions.
