The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) after experiencing “slight swelling” on the legs and “bruises in one of his hands,” the White House said Thursday.
The press secretary, Karoline Leavitt said that the 79 -year -old president underwent ultrasound and a “comprehensive exam” that included a vascular diagnostic study.
“The tests showed results in the normal limit,” he said.
Trump's doctor confirmed that there was no evidence of deep venous thrombosis (TVP), a condition in which blood clots are formed in deep veins, typically in the legs.
Chronic venous insufficiency occurs when leg veins cannot return blood efficiently to the heart.
The condition is more common in people over 50 and affects approximately 1 in 20 individuals, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
Johns Hopkins Medicine explains that CVI can make blood flow back and accumulate on the legs.
This can lead to swelling, cramps, skin discoloration, ulcers and varicose veins.
While the CVI is not considered potentially deadly, “it can be painful and disabling,” says Johns Hopkins.
Risk factors include age, excess weight, family history, previous leg injuries, pregnancy, smoking, lack of exercise and high blood pressure in the legs of the legs.
Treatment options include compression therapy and lifestyle changes such as regular exercise, leg elevation and weight control.
As for the bruises in Trump's hand, his doctor said he was “consistent with the smaller damage of soft tissues by frequent handshakes.”
Despite the diagnosis, it was said that Trump was in “excellent health” during his annual exam in April.
