• The State Police, independent candidacy, restructuring of security architecture agrees
Delegates at the ongoing constitutional summit on the future of democracy in Nigeria on Thursday in Abuja, agreed to create a Constituent Assembly to write the bill on the constitution of the people for the country.
They also resolved the independent candidacy, the loss of seats by the politicians who desert their parties, the reduction of the number of ministers, the creation of the State Police on the second day of the conference organized by the Patriots, which takes place in Abuja.
The resolutions were presented to journalists by two delegates, professors Maxwell Gidide and Professor Mike Ozekhome (San). Some of the main resolutions said: “There must be a constitution of new, democratic and inclusive people;
“A Constituent Assembly composed of elected members based on non -partisan must be established to discuss and write a new Constitution. The INEC should carry out the elections to the Constituent Assembly;
“That there must be a special force in charge of borders, coastal ways to complement conventional forces;
“That the Constitution must make it mandatory for deserters to lose their seats;
“That there must be a frame that makes the Nigerians in the diaspora participate in the elections;
“That there must be a constitutional provision that makes it mandatory that all electoral matters conclude before swearing in office.”
The summit is gathered by the Patriots, in collaboration with the group of the Nigeria Political Summit (NPSG) to address how the country could have a constitution that reflects the genuine aspirations and needs of the people.
The majority of the leaders who spoke at the conference with the issue: “Update a constitutional democracy that works for everyone in Nigeria”, which is held in the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hotel, Abuja, also studied to sweep electoral reforms that engender free, fair and credible elections in the country.
In separate presentations, the leaders of thought, women and young people requested the return of the power of the center to the federal units, emphasizing that it will verify the autocratic tendencies from the center.
The delegates also requested an independent candidacy for the candidates who do not want to execute the party, the vote of the diaspora and the loss of seats due to politicians' defects.
They also pressed for the reduction in the number of ministers and appointed politicians, apparently to reduce the cost of governance.
According to the 1999 Constitution (amended), a acting president has the constitutional mandate to appoint at least one minister of each of the 36 states in the federal cabinet.
Other key resolutions of the delegates included the restructuring of the nation's security architecture, the creation of the subnational police to address internal security and electoral reforms that will deepen democracy.
