The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has signed a new executive order that imposed sanctions on people who burn or desecrate the US flag.
In a statement issued by the White House on Monday, the president described the flag as one of the most emblematic symbols of the nation, which represents his identity, freedom and strength.
“Our great American flag is the most sacred and appreciated symbol of the United States of America, and American freedom, identity and strength. For almost two and a half centuries, many thousands of US patriots have fought, bleed and died to keep stars and stripes proud,” Trump said.
In addition, he emphasized that the flag should serve as a unifying emblem for all citizens, regardless of their differences.
“American Flag is a special symbol in our national life that should unite and represent all Americans of each background and path of life,” he added.
According to the order, the US flag is recognized as one of the most durable symbols in the country, with efforts to desecrate it as acts that could incite hostility or violence.
He cites the decisions of the Supreme Court on the protections of the first amendment, but points out that the court has never argued that the ardor of the flag probably causes imminent action without law or considered as “words of struggle” is constitutionally protected.
The Directive empowers the Attorney General to enforce the criminal and civil laws against the desecration of the flag, where he violates the laws of neutral content and damage to damage, including violent crimes, hate crimes, civil rights violations and damage to property. It also orders federal agencies to send these cases to state or local authorities when appropriate.
In addition, the Order authorizes the Secretary of State, the Attorney General and the Secretary of National Security to deny or revoke visas, residence, naturalization or other immigration benefits for foreign citizens who are guilty of the desecration of the flag, and to seek their removal when the law allows it.
The order, which entered into force immediately after the firm, establishes that if any part is invalid, the remaining provisions will remain executable.
