The Union of Universities of Academic Personnel (ASUU) in Sokoto has threatened to embark on a national strike due to the failure of the federal government to solve pending problems that affect Nigerian universities.

Members of the Union of the Usmanum Danfodiyo University, the State University of Sokoto and the University of Education of Shehu Shagari organized a protest on Tuesday, asking for an urgent government intervention.

Going to journalists during the protest, Prof. Nurudeen Almustopha, president of the UDUS chapter, urged the Government to implement the report of the Committee directed by Ahmed presented in February 2025, which addresses financing, university autonomy and academic freedom.

He also rejected the proposed loan scheme for teachers, describing it as an “poisoned chalice” intended to enslave academics. Instead, Asuu demanded the release of retained wages and the signing of the renegotiated agreement that has remained pending since 2021.

The union accused the government of neglecting the education sector, citing inappropriate funds, interference in the university government and policies that undermine academic freedom. According to Asuu, these actions have weakened institutions, demoralized staff and has reduced the quality of education.

Asuu asked the interested parties, including the National Assembly, Nirec, Nans and the traditional rulers, who prevail in the government to avoid another national closure.

Asuu’s frequent strikes have interrupted academic calendars for decades, leaving students and parents concerned with another imminent crisis.
