The president of the United States, Donald Trump, has reacted to the horrible murder of a Ukrainian woman, Iryna Zarutska, who was fatally stabbed aboard a light rail train in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Trump while talking at the Bible Museum in Washington, DC, expressed condolences to the family of Ukrainian refugees, describing the attack as “vicious” and labeling the suspect, decaring the Brown Jr., a “crazy” and “lunatic”.

“I only give my love and hope to the young woman who was stabbed in Charlotte for a madman, a lunatic,” said the president. “She was sitting there, brutally stabbed. There are evil people, and if we don’t handle them, we don’t have a country.”

The attack, which took place on August 22, was captured in a disturbing video published during the weekend by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police. Zarutska, who fled from Ukraine in 2022 during the war with Russia, was stabbed several times by Brown, 34.

Brown, who has a long criminal history that includes armed hand, break and entrance, and theft, has been accused of first degree murder. Since then, a judge ordered him to undergo an evaluation in a hospital, according to CNN.

Trump used the incident to highlight the hard position of his administration on crime, while criticizing the Biden administration for what he described as an unofficial influx of migrants to the United States.

“When you have horrible murders, you have to take horrible actions,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy criticized Charlotte’s authorities for not avoiding tragedy, saying that Brown’s criminal should have kept him behind bars.

“This monster had a longer history than a CVS receipt, including prison time by robbery with a dangerous weapon, breaking and entering, and theft. Not punishing it properly, Charlotte failed Iryna Zarutska and Carolinianos del Norte,” Duffy wrote in a position in X.

The tragic incident has promoted the renewed debate on crime and public safety in the United States, with Trump promising to extend the federal police presence in cities that fight against growing violence.
