The United States Department of Justice filed a lawsuit on Thursday against Uber Technologies, accusing the Discrimination Transport Company with Disabilities.
The Government is looking for a court order, monetary damage and a civil sanction for alleged violations of the American Law with disabilities.
The complaint filed in a federal court in northern California said that Uber drivers often failed to accommodate riders who use service animals or wheelchairs that could be carried.
According to Bloomberg, Uber has faced similar claims before. In 2021, the company agreed to pay more than $ 2 million and change its policies after the Justice Department said it charged discriminatory rates for passengers with disabilities.
Uber, however, played the last accusation, stating that “cyclists who use guide dogs or other assistance devices deserve a safe, respectful and welcoming experience in Uber, full stop,” said an Uber spokesman. “We have a clear zero tolerance policy for confirmed service denials.”
The spokesman added that each driver “must recognize and accept” with the Uber -service animals policy in the US. And all relevant accessibility laws before using the driving application. When the violations are confirmed, the company takes “decisive measures”, including the deactivation of permanent accounts, he said.
The Department of Justice also said that after the investigation was informed, Uber added an optional feature to let the runners alert the drivers in advance if they will travel with a service animal.
