While the world celebrates World Pharmaceutical Day of this year today, the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), the branch of the state of Ogun, has requested greater integration of pharmacists in the nation’s health system, pointing to its crucial role in the promotion of community health and the improvement of treatment results.
World Pharmaceutical Day is celebrated worldwide every September 25 to recognize the contributions of pharmacists to health systems and communities, with the OGUN PSN urging both the Government and the public to continue strengthening the role of the profession in improving health provision.
The PSN state president, Mrs. Oyesunlola Okunuga, said that pharmacists remain one of the most accessible health professionals and, often, the first point of contact for many Nigerians looking for medical care, since it emphasized the need for policies to create environments that allow pharmacists to completely use their experience at all levels of health.
Okunuga highlighted this year’s conference with the theme ‘Think of health, think of the pharmacist’, describing it as a clear reminder that medical care is not only about medicines but about people. He explained that pharmacists are trained to provide health promotion, medication management and chronic disease monitoring, in addition to dispensing medications.
“Pharmacists are more than just medication dispensers. We are trained health professionals who play a fundamental role in health promotion, medication management and chronic disease monitoring,” he said, and added that continuous professional development for members remains central to the objectives of society.
In addition, he revealed that Ogun pharmacists actively participate in dissemination programs, dialogues of policies and collaborations that place patients in the heart of the provision of medical care.
He added that public members should take advantage of a greater advantage of pharmaceutical accessibility, not only for drug -related concerns but also for preventive medical care advice. The Public Relations officer of the branch, Babajide Otubanjo, revealed that the company will organize a workshop labeled with ‘prevention, treatment and care of drugs’ in collaboration with the Drug Control Committee OGUN (OSDCC).
The training, he said, will equip pharmacists even more with modern strategies in prevention of drug abuse and patient care.
