The new inhaler cuts asthma attacks in children by 45% – study

New research has found that an inhaler containing two medications can reduce the risk of asthma attacks by almost half, giving hope to some millions of families worldwide.

This new study, called the trial (anti-inflammatory reliever of children), the first random controlled investigation to directly compare the effectiveness of an inhaler of Budesonida-Formoterol 2-IN-1 against traditional salbutamol, revealed that this inhaler 2 in 1 is not only safe, but also works for children of five years and young people.

The results show that the use of a single anti -inflammatory reliever inhaler 2 in 1, which combines inhaled corticosteroid Budesonide (ICS) and rapid -action bronchodilator formterol, reduced children’s asthma attacks on an average of 45%, compared to the widely used salbutamol flautch.

Asthma is the most frequent children’s disease in the long term, with around 113 million young people around the world that are believed to be affected. The attacks can be fatal, so preventing them is as vital as relieving them.

For decades, Salbutamol inhalers have been the angular stone of the relief of asthma symptoms for children aged five to fifteen, despite the increasingly convincing evidence that supports alternative treatments in adults. It quickly expands the airways but not long ago to stop swelling.

The care study was carried out by the New Zealand Medical Research Institute in collaboration with Imperial College London, the University of Otago, Wellington, Starship Children’s Hospital and the University of Auckland.

The researchers followed 360 children from New Zealand between 5 and 15 years for a year. In half of them they were told to take the combined inhaler of Budesonida-Formoterol every time he experienced symptoms. The control group used standard salbutamol inhaler.

The children in the combined inhaler, on average, experienced 0.23 attacks per year, while the children in Salbutamol experienced 0.41 attacks. In a nutshell, if 100 children made the change of salbutamol to the new alternative, 18 attacks would be avoided per year.

Equally important, no other security problems were found in the study. Secondary effect rates were effectively identical in both groups, and there were no differences in lung function, growth or general control of asthma.

Researchers say that findings, published today in Lancet, provide the necessary evidence to align the global asthma patterns of children with adults, which could benefit millions of children around the world with mild to moderate asthma.

Dr. Lee Hatter, first author of the study and senior clinical researcher at the New Zealand Medical Research Institute, described the results a great advance.

Hatter declared: “For the first time, we have shown that Budesonida-Formoterol inhaler 2-EN-1, used as necessary for the relief of symptoms, can significantly prevent asthma attacks in children with mild asthma. This evidence-based treatment has the potential to lead to better asthma results in children globally.”

In a comment, Dr. Andrew Bush, a senior consultant of respiratory pediatrics at the Imperial College in London and one of the researchers behind the studio, said: “I am delighted to have been able to prove that an inhaler who is significantly attacks of attacks, an advance in itself for adults, is safe for children with soft asthma.

The care study has the potential to alter the way asthma is treated in children worldwide. By demonstrating that a single inhaler can treat symptoms and prevent attacks, the study supports the combination of pediatric recommendations with adults.
