The Hip-Hop Magnate Sean “Diddy” combs will be sentenced today in New York for two positions related to prostitution, crimes that could see him spend more than a decade after bars even after being authorized of the most serious accusations.
The 55 -year -old man, once one of the most powerful figures in global entertainment, was acquitted in July of the positions of sexual trafficking and extortion that carried the possibility of life imprisonment in prison.
But the members of the jury found him guilty of two positions linked to a federal statute that makes it illegal to transport people through the state lines for prostitution. Each has a maximum penalty of 10 years.
Prosecutors urge Judge Arun Subramanian to impose a sentence of not less than 11 years, describing the combs as “without regret” and a public threat.
His lawyers, on the other hand, are looking for a much lighter result; 14 months, which would effectively mean his immediate release after more than a year already fulfilled custody in a Brooklyn installation.
Before the sentence, the judge received impact statements from victims of women who testified during the two -month trial.
Casandra Ventura, the singer known as Cassie’s ex -girlfriend, described years of physical, emotional and sexual abuse in her relationship with him.
“The entire court of the court saw real images of combs kicking me and hitting me while trying to escape a monster in 2016,” he wrote. “People watched this image dozens of times, seeing my body thrown to the ground, my hands on my head, curled up in a fetal position to protect me from the worst blows.”
Ventura said that she and her family had to leave the New York area for fear of “remuneration” if combs is released. Another witness is also expected, who testified under the name of MIA, today read his statement in the Court.
ComBs himself has asked for mercy. In a letter to Judge Subramanian, he apologized for the “terrible evidence of violence” presented during the trial, and added that the prison has left it “humble and broken in my essence.”
He told the Court that he was “scared to death” of being far from his family and promised that “he will never commit a crime again.” It is also expected to speak directly before the sentence.
However, the defense did not play the sexual activity of ComBs or the history of violence during the trial, but argued that it did not comply with the legal threshold for traffic or success. They described the crimes related to prostitution as less serious and pressed by clemency.
The combs lawyers have argued that their “legacy is shattered” and that it has already “suffered enough.” But prosecutors responded that “putting together the energy supply” to manipulate others through fear, coercion and control, combs inflicted lasting damage and must be responsible.
Judges in federal cases have a broad discretion in the sentence, although federal guidelines must weigh. Together with legal arguments, Subramanian has also received reference letters that support combs.
Regardless of today’s decision, some of the combs allies have communicated with the White House in search of a presidential forgiveness.
For now, all eyes are in the room of the Federal Court of Manhattan, where one of the most observed evidence in the recent entertainment history advances towards its conclusion.
