Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has described the agitation for a new state for the South-East region as necessary.

According to the governor, the creation of a sixth state will correct the imbalance that the region faces in the country.

Nwifuru disclosed this to journalists at the end of the State Executive Council meeting held at the Executive Council Chambers, New Government House, Centennial City, Abakaliki.

The governor said: “Yes, I would like to see another state created in the southeast because the region needs to get another state to address the imbalance we have experienced.”

Speaking on reports that Ebonyi could lose three local government areas to the new state, Nwifuru said: “I am no longer in the legislature; I am now in the executive. I have not seen any document and I cannot respond to a document that I have not seen.”

Commenting on the growing trend of people taking to social media to insult stakeholders of the state, the governor said, “People are taking advantage; our youth are venturing out to insult their elders, but they should understand the traditional consequences of insulting their elders,” he said.
