The Niger State Electricity Regulatory Commission (NSERC) recently organized a meeting with key stakeholders to address the current electricity supply issues affecting residents of Mokwa community, Niger State.
The meeting brought together representatives of the Mokwa Community, New Bussa Electricity Distribution Company Limited, in Borgu LGA of the state including Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), Oyo State and Kiara Rice Mill.
Discussions focused on critical topics such as terms of service, customer commitments and strategies to improve power supply reliability.
Participants also addressed the need for billing transparency and improvements in overall service quality in affected areas.
NSERC Chairman Mohammed Sharu opened the meeting by reaffirming the Commission’s commitment to the fair treatment of electricity consumers and the application of service standards across distribution companies.
He highlighted the role of NSERC in mediating and ensuring that both service providers and consumers meet their obligations.
Representatives of New Bussa Electricity Distribution Company Limited and IBEDC highlighted significant operational challenges, including network limitations and inadequate infrastructure, which have contributed to inconsistent power supply.
Both companies expressed dedication to improving customer engagement, upgrading failing infrastructure, and refining metering programs to ensure billing accurately reflects actual usage.
Dr. Muhammad Nma, representing the Mokwa community, expressed gratitude for the proactive measures of the NSERC and pointed out the detrimental effects of unreliable electricity and power supply on local businesses, educational institutions and healthcare services.
He urged distribution companies to fulfill their commitments and promptly implement the necessary improvements.
At the conclusion of the meeting, all stakeholders agreed to establish a Monitoring Committee, consisting of representatives of NSERC, the electricity distribution companies and the Mokwa community.
This committee was responsible for overseeing the implementation of agreed actions and providing monthly updates on service delivery and electrical reliability.
This meeting marks an important step forward in NSERC’s ongoing efforts to promote transparency, accountability and collaboration between electricity providers and the communities they serve, ensuring equitable and reliable access to electricity for all.
