Professor Emmanuel Oladumiye of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), has identified graphic design as a crucial tool in combating misinformation and strengthening national identity.

Delivering the 187th inaugural lecture of the university, titled “Graphic Design: Catalyst for Human Transformation and Development from Darkness to Light”, Oladumiye said effective visual communication plays a key role in shaping public perception and promoting unity.

He noted that in today’s digital age, marked by information overload and false content, visual communication remains vital for clarity, truth and social cohesion.

The professor urged information managers to adopt graphic design strategies to expose deepfakes and correct misleading narratives circulating online.

According to him, well-crafted images can inspire positive behavior, reinforce cultural values and support national development when used responsibly.

“Graphic design has become a frontline tool in the fight against misinformation, especially now that AI can produce compelling images and stories in seconds.

“A well-crafted image can point out a deepfake or, if misused, amplify a false narrative, so the designer’s responsibility has never been greater.

“Graphic design further contributes to promoting sustainable development. Through posters, campaigns, infographics and ecological brands, designers can promote responsible consumption, recycling culture, the defense of clean energy, urban cleaning and climate awareness.

“Graphic design is a transformative influence in educational, religious, political, environmental and economic spheres.”

He described graphic design as a rich and complete visual language that communicates human aspirations and achievements, encapsulates political beliefs and ideologies, and gives voice to the desires and dreams of society as a whole.

The lecturer proposed the establishment and implementation of comprehensive policies by the government on outdoor advertising to promote environmental sustainability and visual order in Nigerian cities.

This, it said, should include clear guidelines on the design, placement and lifespan of advertising graphics, as well as incentives for the adoption of eco-friendly materials, recyclable media and digital alternatives.

The professor noted that “in this enlightened era, designers are no longer just stylists; they are creative visionaries. They serve as educators, advocates and innovators.

“As a result, graphic designers possess a unique ability to shape perception and influence behavior. With this power, they take on great responsibility.”

Oladumiye said: “Contemporary Nigerian graphic artworks function as tools for social progress. They serve as conduits for technological symbols and signs, and play a crucial role in community development.

“These symbols include road signs, advertising and information billboards, sports tracks and markings, and even the national flag.”

The don added that design and communication curricula should integrate visual literacy, cultural symbolism and environmental responsibility, while national awareness campaigns should employ locally inspired symbols and narratives.

He stated that graphic design must be recognized as a strategic tool to shape perceptions, influence attitudes and foster national unity, and further stated that Nigerian designers must be supported through grants, competitions and exhibitions that highlight transformative work, particularly on sustainability and human development.

The Chairman of the occasion, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adenike Oladiji, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Taiwo Amos, congratulated the lecturer on the lecture, which she described as stimulating and insightful.

He said that intellectual discourse is the tradition of higher institutions, and that cerebral dedication is worthy of praise.

He said Oladumiye has contributed greatly in his area of expertise and has become a leading figure in the field of graphic design.
