The Kano State Ministry of Health has initiated a large-scale training program for health workers from 100 primary care centers (PHCs) on the Nigerian Hypertension Control Initiative (NHCI) and diabetes services, as part of efforts to strengthen early detection and management of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) across the state.
Speaking during the flag hoisting on Friday, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, expressed gratitude to Allah Almighty and commended Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf for his unwavering support for the revitalization of primary care centers in the state.
He said the state has recorded remarkable progress in scaling up hypertension services, recalling that the NHCI started with just 12 primary health care centers in 2020, increased to 52 centers in 2022 and has now reached 310 under the current administration, with 620 health workers already trained.
Dr Yusuf revealed that the new training will equip two health workers for every 100 additional primary care centres, bringing the total number of beneficiary centers to 410.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensure that all primary care centers in Kano State are fully saturated with standardized services for hypertension and diabetes, with the aim of reducing the growing burden of NCDs.
