Ondo State Governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has reiterated his administration’s commitment to building a just and inclusive society by strengthening access to justice at the grassroots level.
He made the remark in Akure on Thursday while swearing in over 120 newly appointed Justices of the Peace (JP).
Those appointed include prominent traditional rulers, religious leaders, security chiefs, political figures and professionals who have distinguished themselves in community service.
Among them are the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams; the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladetoyinbo Aladelusi; the Osemawe of Ondo, Oba Victor Kiladejo; Bishop Félix Adejumo; retired Major General Dayo Olukoju; and the elder statesman Chief Seinde Arogbofa.
The ceremony marks the first time since 2008 (17 years ago) that the state government has appointed a new group of justices of the peace.
Governor Aiyedatiwa said the move reflects his administration’s determination to make justice more accessible and effective, noting that the new JPs will play a key role in strengthening the rule of law in all communities.
He commended the Commissioner for Justice, Kayode Ajulo, for reviving the JP appointment process, which had been dormant for a long time.
Speaking at the event, Ajulo said the selection underlines the government’s dedication to upholding the rule of law.
He described Justices of the Peace as an essential link between the government and citizens, responsible for certifying documents, witnessing sworn statements, mediating disputes, acting as guarantors and promoting peaceful coexistence.
“Their presence encourages civic responsibility and ensures faster access to basic justice, especially at the local level,” he added.
Iba Gani Adams expressed gratitude for his inclusion and described the appointment as a new calling to serve the people of his home state.
The oath of allegiance was administered by Justice Aiyedun Olusola, the Chief Judge of the state, who was represented by Justice Akintan Osadebe.
He outlined the responsibilities of the new PCs, which include judicial and quasi-judicial duties, administrative functions, community involvement and social welfare oversight.
