There appears to be no end in sight to the leadership struggle rocking the former ruling party, the People’s Democratic Party. controls by the Nigerian tribune revealed that the Mohammed Abdulrahman-led faction of the party, which is supported by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, is planning to call for a new national convention to counter the convention held last month in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
To facilitate the new process to form a separate group of national officials, a meeting was held at the FCT minister’s residence on Sunday. The meeting was attended by active federal legislators, certain members of the National Labor Committee, state presidents, among others.
Among those present at the meeting where the decision was made to hold new congresses in states where no congresses have been held include PDP national president Abdul Rahman Mohammed; the chairman of the board of directors, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa; National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu; former FCT Senator Philip Tanimu Aduda; Former Governor and Ambassador-designate of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu; and the host, Nyesom Wike.
Speaking at the event, Senator Ohuabunwa, Chairman of the BoT, said his leadership was determined together with the NWC to ensure that all actions followed due process, party guidelines and the Electoral Act.
He said: “We will work with this NWC, encourage and support them to ensure that the right things are done. We are making significant progress in the reorganization of the affected states, including the constitution of credible interim committees to prepare the ground for transparent congresses and the subsequent convention.”
He maintained that everyone must get to work to restore internal structures and discipline to promote cohesion in the opposition party.
