Why Igbos should forget Biafra agitation – Umahi – Tribune Online

Public Works Minister David Umahi has said the agitation for a separate Biafra state is no longer necessary.

He maintained that the South East has been fully integrated into the political and economic mainstream of Nigeria under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Umahi made these remarks during an inspection tour of ongoing federal infrastructure projects across the Southeast region.

According to him, feelings of marginalization that previously fueled separatist sentiments in the area have been significantly reduced due to the increased federal presence, particularly in road construction and other critical infrastructure projects.

“There will be no need for Biafra again. In past administrations, our people felt very marginalized and that is why some people were campaigning for Biafra.

“But today I can say that we are well integrated into the mainstream of the nation, Nigeria,” Umahi opined.

The minister commended the Tinubu administration for what he described as greater inclusion and participation of the South East in national affairs.

“We feel comfortable with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. We are very happy with the integration,” he added.

Umahi also highlighted several ongoing and completed federal projects in the region, noting that many had been abandoned for more than a decade before being revived by the current government.

“For more than 15 years, a government came to do something and then left,” he said.

He cited a major road project being carried out by RCC under an MTN-funded deal, noting that the section is expected to be completed in February at a cost of £202 billion.

The minister maintained that sustained infrastructure development remains key to national unity and the long-term stability of the Southeast.
