Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davidhas said he would bet money on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu being re-elected, citing division among opposition politicians ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Davido made this known in an interview with News Central on Tuesday while discussing the political situation in Nigeria and the recently concluded Osun State gubernatorial election.

According to him, several Southern politicians are already interested in contesting for the presidency, making it difficult for the opposition to present a united front against Tinubu.

He questioned why politicians could not come together and work towards a common goal, arguing that a united opposition could pose a serious challenge to the president.

Davido said the situation would require significant effort to change, but added that the result of the recently concluded Osun State gubernatorial election showed that there is still hope.

He said: “The opposition now in Nigeria, if they are going to say: ‘Okay, David, put up your money, um, I have to decide.’ It is not: ‘Oh, I don’t want to participate in the presidential election.’ They could say: ‘Okay, I think the president might ignore it’ because the opposition is divided.

“In the South alone, almost eight people want to be president. Why can’t they all sit together? Because let me tell you, if there was a unified opposition, the presidents might have a problem. But they are not unified.

“So it’s going to cost a lot. But because of what happened in Osun, there is still hope. All the youth of Nigeria were the future, they were the ones in charge now.”

The singer had previously distanced himself from Nigerian politics, saying he had no interest in participating in the country’s political system, which he described as “evil”.

Davido made the comments in a post on X while reacting to criticism over his support for his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, during the recently concluded Osun State governorship election.

He said his participation in the elections was based on family loyalty, emphasizing that he did not mobilize anyone or rely on outside support while supporting his uncle.

“I didn’t bring anyone! No one defended me! I supported my family on my own!!” Davido wrote.

He also criticized those who criticized his participation in the elections and described their actions as “heartless” and “disgusting.”

The musician said he had fulfilled what he considered his responsibility and would no longer be involved in political activities.

“I’ve done my job! Nigerian politics is bad AND I DON’T WANT TO BE PART OF IT UNTIL GOD HELP US!” said.

Davido was among the prominent figures who campaigned for Adeleke during the Osun governorship race.

Adeleke, who contested on the Accord Party platform, polled 511,067 votes to defeat the All Progressives Congress candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, who polled 444,815 votes.
